On a crowded flghit back from the sunny charms of Greece recently, I was allocated a seat next to two charming young ladies who were off to study dentistry at one of the best dental schools in the country, affiliated with a top medical college in the UAE. They explained how they were the first ones in their family to be allowed to study away from home and we started to discuss social taboos and norms, regarding how times have changed and that now it was much more acceptable for girls as well as boys to study and live away from home. Although to be honest this change was still taking a long time to filter down to the masses and was still seen as a privilege of the elite.These girls were from middle class backgrounds and had found it difficult to get permission from their families to attend a school for dentistry in another country, the final deciding factor was that both had managed to get full dental scholarships.They told how they had always wanted to be in the medical field and dentistry was their chosen option. I wondered why anyone would want to poke around in people’s mouths and how to me it seemed that the rewards were not that great.I was informed however that dentists were very well respected and that this very air of respectability, associated with their profession, was a major point brought up by the girls when trying to obtain permission to study abroad. Dentists are highly in demand and not just for their skills with the drill, but as eligible marriage partners, apparently many parents trying to find a good match for their offspring are happy enough with a dentist, although of course that is only if their first choice of a doctor is not available!Dentists who graduate from a top dental schools or university for dentistry are always at an advantage since just the cache attached to them will ensure higher chances of a successful practice. These fortunate may spend their days looking into horrible plaque filled mouths, and trying to treat decayed and dying teeth, but at least they go home with a very healthy pay check each month. To be fair there are many dentists for whom their chosen career path leads to a sense of satisfaction and fulfilment, considering that they do help millions of people feel better.A visit to the dentist for most people causes a variety of emotions, ranging from intense dread, a sense of foreboding and sheer terror, to reliefwhen their problem is treated and they are no longer in pain. We all have a love hate relationship with our dentist, since we don’t like having to go and see them and pay for six-monthly check-ups, but on the other hand when we have excruciating toothache and cannot sleep with the agony, we love the fact that this person can make the pain go away.
